Some random reviews:
Here's what a few folks had to say about Billy's performances:
A fan posted this on Amazon re:
the live recording of the "By Request" album:
"If you want a taste of true non-commercial California sound, pick this one up. It is full of live tracks and very few studio tracks. The band was a well kept secret for years until 1986 when 'At This Momment' was played on Family Ties. Radio stations wanted a copy of the song to play for their listeners. The rest, as they say, is music history. Billy Vera and The Beaters live and breathe music. They are constantly playing dates to the fans that appriciate them, and they will appear in the places you least expect them to be. You might hear them do a TV theme song, or appear in a movie, or talk show. For a time, I also had their little known, out-of-print, Retro Nuevo. Still, this one is always the best for rainy days. And there are plenty to like, such as 'At This Momment', 'Hopeless Romantic', and 'Here Comes The Dawn Again' (I like Billy's opening words on that one). When it comes to California, no one does it better than Billy Vera and the Beaters."
From a fan at a recent gig:
"I have been a fan of Vera's forever (LOL) - love his "Earthy" voice - always a pleasure to hear him sing."
More reviews on the live recording, "By Request":
"Billy Vera captures a wide range of styles in this remarkable collection of tunes. "Strange Things Happen" finds Billy kickin' back and beltin' in out. And, Skunk Baxter's pedal steel artistry is at its peak. (Skunk, who had a hand in producing the CD, "puts the pedal down" on "Millie Make Me Some Chilli"), proof that Billy can indeed interpret C&W as Billy Vera, not an imitation of someone else.
If you like live recordings, you'll think you're there in LA when Billy recorded this one. And, for those of us who weren't, we can only hope there'll be a next time!
